The largest painting of my career, this is an allegory of myself and my wife Lindsey’s journey through life. The setting is the beach at Lytham St Annes, where we moved shortly after getting married. We are the young couple setting out together and looking forward to the middle stage, with children and responsibilities, and finally onto the sunlit years when it’s just the two of us again.

One technical challenge was creating the sense of space in the large expanse of the beach, which is basically the same colour. The paint is built up in the foreground and I spent lots of time observing the changing textures of sand.

At an earlier stage, St Anne’s Pier featured in the distance, but was painted out as it distracted from the main narrative of the figures.
